The Drive Behind Shopping

Do you find your shopping is out of control?

Unless you are a seller of goods or services you more than likely are a buyer. Your upbringing could be influencing this habit. All of us would be familiar with shopping complexes conveniently positioned near where we live, particularly in built up areas. Centers have become like a recreational place for meeting and a get away from the hum drum of day to day life.

“Oh what are you doing today?”  ” Oh thought we would go to the shopping mall.”

Our environment can trigger our behaviors which over time becomes our habits. This further results in our addictions.
One such habit is the addiction we form to shopping. Our emotions have a huge influence here.

When we purchase items

Brain chemicals kick in, making the person feel good.

While the causes of addictions can continue their destructive behaviors. Some individuals get a high from shopping (or any addictive behavior) which causes the sufferer to lose control and buy many items for which they have no need. Endorphins and dopamine, naturally occurring opiate receptor sites in the brain, get switched on, and the person feels good, and if it feels good they are more likely to do it — it’s reinforced.

Shopping seems to be associated with:

  • Excitement seeking
  • Emotional deprivation in childhood
  • Negative feelings, pain, loneliness, boredom, depression, fear, anger.
  • Need to gain control Approval seeking
  • Genuinely impulsive and compulsive

  2. You’re right of course. Shopping can get out of control – and we’ve all bought items we later regret.
Sadly for some, shopping can become an addiction, almost like a drug. You hear of people buying thousands of dollars worth of items, only to take them back the following week to get their money back. Worse still for those who buy when they can’t afford and run up massive credit debt.

  4. Its interesting how shopping can make us feel. I don’t consider myself a compulsive shopper and am not that interested in shopping for fun unless I have some money spare and something which I need to buy (like a new camera) and then I enjoy it.

      Hello Jackie,

Know a compulsive shopper who has like a brain snap at the shops. If you have something specific to get then you have to go shopping or online.

    Hi,
Your article about shopping addiction is so true. I found that my housemate has the addiction to the point where he just buys whatever he looks at no matter if it is needed or not. It appears that the continuation of buying things make him feel good! Great article.

      Hi Wilson,

Yes sometimes instant gratification gets the better of us. These advertisers and plaza owners sure understand business. They are the sellers.

    Hi John
I think I have the ‘feel good’ brain chemicals that come from shopping. Iit can be exxhausting but it’s a good exhausting and for me always a social occassion and a chance to catch up with friends.

Yes, there is certainly something about spending a day shopping, and coming home with lots of goodies. Although I have to say I do it far less often these days than I used to prior to having children.

It is quite scary how some people can build up huge credit card debt due to being addicted to shopping.
